Happy 75th to Our Veterans Memorial Building

The Veterans Memorial Building, one of the most often-used and iconic structures in Culver City, celebrated its 75th Anniversary this year.

Culver City acquired a major portion of the land, known as Exposition Park, in 1938. After WWII, it was officially designated as Veterans Memorial Park on August 8, 1949. A bond was passed by Culver City residents, as there was a need for a community recreation center, restaurant, stage, and gymnasium. The so-called “Tourist Tower” promised great views of MGM’s backlot sets.

The cornerstone was laid on April 15, 1950, and our Veterans Memorial building was dedicated on March 9, 1951. The entry proudly exhibits a growing number of markers, placed to honor and remember residents — veterans who served our country and fought for our freedom.
