St. Augustine School Closed

We at the Historical Society are deeply saddened to recently hear that St. Augustine’s Catholic School closed its doors in June of 2025 due to the steady decline of enrollment over the last years.

In 1883, J. Francisco Figueroa donated this land to the Roman Catholic Church of Los Angeles to serve the community in the La Ballona Valley. The church was named after St. Monica’s son, and was the first church built in what would later become Culver City; the church seen in the photo was completed in 1887.

St. Augustine’s school opened its doors on September 7, 1926 and served PreK–8th grade students. Many Culver City residents attended this community fixture during its 99 years in operation.
